SAFE HAVEN

Title of the Project: Safe Haven

n - If part of a country is declared a safe haven, people who need to escape from a dangerous situation such as a war can go there and be protected; A safe haven is a place, a situation, or an activity which provides people with an opportunity to escape from things that they find unpleasant or worrying;

I want to take this idea of a safe haven and let the audience question what is a safe haven for themselves, at the same time considering what a is safe haven for the characters in this piece. Instead of it being a physical place of refuge, it's representing a thing or idea that the characters feels safe in where they feel comfort during this time of tension.

Theme: Betrayal and Redemption

  • Explanation of Theme: A reoccurring theme in Christianity in which the follower rejects, turns away or has a short coming with Christ, is brought to a low point because of their rebellion, in which they seek forgiveness and God forgives and restores.
  • Central Goal of the Film: To show the importance in trusting and depending on God to supply your needs.

Short Synopsis of the Project:
This project is about a young woman who, in attempt to provide more for her family ends up doing more damage than good. The young woman, Carla Newman, playing the role of the mom comes home with fresh groceries which she received in exchange for receiving the mark of the beast. Before this moment, the family has been struggling to survive off of their backyard vegetable garden and chicken coop. The family, consists of a grandmother, and two children ages 15(boy) and 12(girl), are all deeply rooted in Biblical Christian teachings. They hold daily Bible studies in home and take pride on their family fellowships during supper time meals spent at the dinner table. The mom, Carla, who is usually a part of all these activities, has been spending more time looking at the conditions the family has been living in. She considers their run down home and the daily meals of a few vegetable and chicken they must divide amongst four and hopes to give her family more so they can live in abundance. The only way she can do this is by receiving the mark of the beast, which allows her to get a job, earn an income, and by the tools she needs to fix up her home and give her family something more, and better to eat. However, her plan goes sour once her mother, the grandmother, becomes weak and Carla is no longer home to spend the time she would like to take care of her mother.

  • Time: only a few years into the present, 2018
  • Atmosphere: muted and gloomy
  • Introduction of the Main Character: Carla Newman. aged 43 with two children, struggles with religious identity when living condition become tough.
  • Conflict: When Carla Newman comes home from receiving the implant, her and her mom, Grandmother, are already at odds and the Hand of God retracts itself from the household.

Goal of the Project:
  • to show my viewers how important it is to depend on Jesus Christ as their main source.
  • to use the  medium as a grounds for discussing a soon to come event from the Biblical Christian perspective.
  • to alert the viewer of times to come
  • to persuade the viewer to reject any identification implants, especially the mark of the beast.
  • to tell my viewers that Jesus Christ will always comfort and provide for His people

In Response to THURSDAY, AUGUST 23, 2012

In class today I presented my idea for the semester project, and even though the conversation did not necessarily go in the direction I preferred, I received some valuable and very helpful information.
Originally, the piece was going to be a silent, more so no dialogue with a soundtrack, and I would rely using the body and face of the character to explain certain situations. The issue that came about with this was, am I not incorporating dialogue because it seems to be the easy way out, or is there a greater purpose in having no dialogue. When I first set up the story, it was without verbal language, and from there I decided to let the characters' body tell the story.
Another question that popped up was, how am I going to include the backstory. As I was giving the backstory of the piece, the critique quickly wrapped around itself on idea to present the underlining meaning of it all. This was very helpful because my class audience is not familiar with any of the ideas I was presenting so when my outside audience sees it, I need to approach it from the standpoint that gives them all of the information necessary to fully grasp the concept. This could have also been an issue in my presentation as well, and it partly was, and now, another thing I must do is to find a way to clearly present my ideas without disregarding information that would align their thoughts to mine. Nevertheless, I must work the entire backstory into this piece, very clearly, so that my audience will be on the same page. I also received ideas about ways to flesh out the piece so that the "bad guy" does not end up on top.

Statement of Intent

So for this semester, I intend to closely work with the theme, End Times. Living in a post rapture world. And really that is all about how, after Jesus comes and takes His Bride, He takes the people who are waiting and looking for him, but what is happening on earth after that. Yes, you can still get to heaven after that. There will be different thing that start to happen, but for me my focus is the mark of the beast. So one important goal that I have for this project is to successfully convey an emotion. Rather than it being up in the air, I look at this, it makes me feel happy and I’ll change my mind later. The goal is to have the audience to be fearful and sympathetic. To the character or for yourself, I want that emotion to be there. I am going to use AfterEffects to really help me get there. So of course, that also depends on what the character looks like, the environment, what colors am I using. What type of style is this? This project will essentially be monochromatic. It will have it’s variations of dark blue, burgundy, I want the palette to make you uncomfortable, so then I can sneak in those other things.

Theme

  • End Times - Life After the Rapture
  • What is good and evil when it comes to survival

Tone and Execution

pallet for outside enviromnents

pallet for inside buildings and domestic spaces

Examples of the conditions of homes

Example of the set up of the outside location (outside of the main house, this is the type of living conditions I am aiming for).

Objective
  • Successfully convey emotions to the audience

Storyline

The story I will be working with revolves around a four character home who is on the fence about receiving this implant because they are low on food, barely paying their bills. In attempt to save the family from starvation, one of the characters receives this implant and comes home with fresh groceries and the entire family at first is really upset because morally, it is the wrong thing to do, and but it also seems like the better thing to do, to put an end to family hunger and terrible living conditions.

The Four Questions.

How long and for what reason have I been making art?
What are my sources for my ideas?
What do I most want to develop a better sense of?
What skills am I bringing to this course?

Since entering high school, I've been producing art. The majority of it was sketches and master copies of other artists' works. It was nothing I was really serious about until my junior year of high school where I had my first art class. We did a lot of basic work, prep work, developing a style of our own, and it wasn't until towards the end of that year I received a version of Adobe Photoshop Elements. I was really excited about it, experimenting with color interactions and textures, it was the first time I had really done something digital. I fell in love with the program and created a series of abstract pieces. I think that because I had my own copy of the software, I became really interested in digital art which developed into a strong interest for animation. From animation I geared more to cinematography and started working on creating my own projects. A lot of my pieces, relate to ideas, stories and objects that I am really interested in. They are usually subjects that I have been thinking about, or researching for months in advance. For example, this semester I'll be focusing on the Christian aspect of the end times and the time of the apocalypse. Especially, since these are the times we are living in, but this is also a topic I've been working on all summer long. One thing I want to develop is a sense of accomplishment throughout the semester instead of just having a satisfaction in completing an assignment. During the summer, I've really pasted together the ideas that I want to work on, so now, instead of just putting together a project for the sake of having it done, I will have something that looks well and that has a greater meaning. In addition, I really want to explore more AfterEffects and what it can do. Though I have the basic work, there are a couple things I want to explore such as creating objects from the ground up, and to explore the effecty side of the program. Through this, I know I'll feel more comfortable in knowing what I can do, what AfterEffects can do, and that whatever crazy idea I have I can pretty much make come true. I really want to explore more with live action footage, since I haven't done a great deal of that. I'll be bringing in a lot of sketches, and real world objects. I'm also fond of photography, recently I have entered into a mild geese obsession.

Day One

So, this is my blog for dynamic imaging II class. It is a big step up from the intro class last semester, especially since now, I am required to create my own schedule and goals and to challenge myself to meet them, and to push myself in the areas needed.

Here on out, posts will document my process. This will include sketchwork and storyboards, daily responses to class time, tutorials and research, and biweekly challenges. The ultimate goal for this semester is to become very savvy with AfterEffects (learning more shortcut, becoming more create in how I approach the program...) and  hopefully you will be able to see by the end of the semester, some sort of growth.

The first class today, was going over what is generally expected of me. To make goals for myself and complete them. If I am, however, planning too much or too little, then my prof is there to help me restructure.
